Attack on Titan (Season 1)

More like attack on humans amirite?

It's been so long since my last post! But I have come back now that my exams are over. There are so many new anime that have released and I want to check out, one of them being Attack on Titan Season 2, and since I watched Season 1 before I started blogging and because of the big gap between them, I went back to refresh my memory on Season 1.

Attack on Titan is set in a fictional world where humanity is on the brink of extinction. Why? Human-eating Titans. Yes, Titans, and as such humans have resorted to building tall walls in order to get away from them. Three in fact, those being Maria, Rose and Sina, and for 100 years humanity has been safe from these Titans. Well, those who remain behind these walls.


That's because humanity is not waiting around and living out their lives behind the walls; there are some who venture beyond the walls to try and learn more about these Titans and if there is a way to fight back, while others ensure peace is maintained within the walls and some basically choose to seek refuge further within.

How does this all tie in? Well, we follow MC Eren Jaegar, a young boy who wants to fight Titans and be able to live outside the walls, and in order to do so he wants to join the Survey Corps, the group of people who venture outside the walls to learn more about the Titans. He's joined by Mikasa Ackerman, a girl who lived with Eren and his family after her own family was killed, and Armin Arlert, their friend who wants to learn more about the outside world.

Shortly after we're introduced to those three do we get to see the Titans in action, as a Colossal Titan, a Titan no one has seen before, appears suddenly and destroys the Wall Maria gate. Titans flock in and begin wreaking havoc within the walls, claiming many victims as they mindlessly run around and eating any human they see. Eren, Mikasa and Armin are the lucky few who seek refuge within Wall Rose, but before they do, Eren helplessly sees his mother being eaten by one of the Titans and vows to kill all Titans.

A few years pass and this is where the story gets some depth in both plot and character. Eren, Mikasa and Armin train to join the Survey Corps to help fight Titans beyond the walls and are joined by a whole roster of characters both essential to the story, and those who are just basically Titan fodder. From here we also get to learn more about the Survey Corps, the Military Police and the Garrison, and just how bloody and horrific it is to fight the Titans when further events take place in mind and physically. These are the times where Attack on Titan reminds you that it's not a light-hearted series where people are able to kills Titans without there being casualties; more often than not there are casualties wherever and whenever Titans appear. And it doesn't stop there as Attack on Titan adds even more surprises which I shall not mention here, though I'm sure most of you reading this have already read the manga or have seen Season 1, and will agree with me here that it is indeed a big surprise and things do seem like they go in humanity's favour after. Again I shall not mention.

I do think Attack on Titan is a brilliant series, and I am enjoying where Season 2 is going at the moment. There is so much depth to the series that I am thinking of reading the manga to be able to understand it. Basically, Season 1 does not scratch the surface of the Attack on Titan universe, but it does serve well as a great introduction to it. I just don't like the fact that people like to remind others at some points in the anime of how good they are for example, but I guess it's their way of building confidence considering their situation. But overall, Attack on Titan is definitely one to watch and a great way of introducing someone new to anime just how deep and bloody anime can get.
