Digimon Adventure Tri: Saikai

Tai, Matt, Sora, Izzy, Joe, TK, Mimi and Kari are back once again in the highly anticipated addition to the Digimon series! Set 6 years after the events in Digimon Adventures, everyone has grown up and are busy attending high school and what not (Mimi is in America and Joe is studying somewhere (no idea)), with Tai playing football/soccer and Matt in a band. But now this all changes as they're reuniting with their Digifriends. Good times ahead.

Once again everyone crosses paths with the DigiWorld and as distortions cause gates to the DigiWorld to open around Odaiba and allow Digimon to enter and wreak havoc. With 4 episodes to fill everyone in on what's happening and how Tai and the gang are involved, the build up to all the action is steady as Kuwagamon goes around causing destruction everywhere. And as we know from the original Digimon, others in the real world are in the know about Digimon, and as expected there is some sort of special unit which is brought in to everyone together (except Joe) and help out with the incidences. That being said, there's no real action until episode 2, which isn't that big an issue considering it's been so long since I've seen everyone and all the Digimon Digivolving into their respective stages.

The plot for Saikai unravels in episodes 3 and 4; something has caused Digimon to become Infected, and a certain Digimon is being targeted by a Digimon known as Alphamon. This is linked to events such as the network disruptions and Kuwagamon being able to enter the real world. Other things do come into play too, what with everyone being grown up and all. It's expected that they've all changed one way or another, and Tai is the one who's changed the most. After being attacked, he takes into account the destruction and danger caused by the Digimon, which makes him wonder whether being involved in this new incident is the right thing to do. This does have an affect on the overall chemistry between the group, especially Matt. Also I mentioned earlier Joe isn't in much since he's struggling with studies as he's in his final year for college/university, which is shown throughout Saikai, meaning Gamomon doesn't show up much either (his greeting to Joe is cute!). He's not really aware of this tension but is kept in the know of what's been happening regarding Kuwagamon.

All in all, it is great to see a development in an anime I grew up with, and these changes make a big difference to the overall atmosphere delivered in the story. 4 episodes were enough to show how much everyone has changed and to develop a new plot featuring Tai and the gang, but not enough to keep you going until the next entry of Adventure Tri. This is definitely a must see for Digimon fans of old and new!
